Do you know how the winners built their ramp?

gyourkoshaven wrote:We (PA) had ours today. The challenge was ramp. My partner and I got out of medal range (I'll post my actual placing when I find out) with a ramp 1560 cm long and all 10 balls in the container.
My group got 3rd place with a ramp 2890mm. long, and all 8 golf balls reaching the container. i really wish that they would have made us build catapult. we had that one absolutely great. the trigger part was the only part that had me confused on how to build it, but 2 weeks before states i finally figured it out. i finally completed a bouncer 3 days before the competition. that one wasnt as good, but it was still decent. with catapult i think that we could easily have won.
How did you build your ramp?
We cut out the bottom of the Styrofoam cups and placed them end to end. we also put 3 supports on the ramp which were made using the same principle, but they werent hollow. i cut a little slope into each support so it would be more stable. i also but plates on the bottom of each support for stability. i let the balls fall down into the junkbox. it worked out really well. i made one for fun a couple weeks ago without a time limit, and was able to just keep building on until i got bored of building. some of the other groups were hilarious epic fails. this one group made 2 rails to hold the ball, but made the rails too small, and ended up not getting a single ball into the container. also, if u havent had ur state tournament yet, just make sure to not put anything in that is not allowed. and items must be taken out of their original containers. that means tape dispensers too. at regionals, i didnt check the box, and my partner put a ruler in by mistake. we ended up finishing 6th out of 17 teams. at states there were only about 7 out of 35 teams who didnt have box violations, so that is a big deal.

Unless my calculations are incorrect, my ramp score of 17,160 was good for 7th place at PA States.

17,000??? We won states with a score of ~4000!

What were your measurements and how many balls did you get in?

Sorry, but if you got 10 balls in, that would mean your lenth was around 16 inches, I have no idea how you can win state with that. Our state won with over 25,000 as a score. Are you sure 4000 wasn't the lenth? cause that would make a lot more sense. 4000 as a lenth might win you nats.

Ah i see.

Let me re-calculate, with CM :P

EDIT: Okay i re-calculated my scores in MM, and I got ~473 CM at States = 4730 MM. Add 8 golf balls (but remember: D x (n+1), so 9) and I got 42570. Does this seem right?

No, my calculations are in mm. My ramp was 1560 mm long (1.56 meters, or a little over 5 feet) and got all 10 tennis balls in. 11 * 1560 = 17160 for 7th place. What have other people been getting?
