Agreed; anything in an event that relates to any other event gives some people an advantage (that's the only reason I did somewhat well in Dynamic Planet; Meteorology has so much overlap)azuritemalachite wrote:Well since it is on the rules, you do have to do study it. It doesn't give an advantage since you already know ahead and you can study it. Plus, I've only seen some rocks questions once and they were like tiebreakers and fairly obvious with the hints.Magikarpmaster629 wrote:azuritemalachite wrote: It is on the rules. I'm pretty sure it's the last one in the topics section. Plus it's on the official fossil list and the rules say you'll have to identify each one on there.
You're right, I just checked the rules. I still don't like those questions, it gives rocks people a distinct advantage........

Re: Fossils B/C
ack. either way, it was kind of unfair because they were asking things like "which of these is associated with oil?" which doesn't really have anything to do with fossils. not really anything i can do about it now, though

Re: Fossils B/C
Again, it was on the rules so you should've studied it. It does give some people an advantage, but overall it should not affect most as the questions are relatively easy that someone with almost no prior knowledge on rocks can deduct based on current events.coprolite_dipstick wrote:ack. either way, it was kind of unfair because they were asking things like "which of these is associated with oil?" which doesn't really have anything to do with fossils. not really anything i can do about it now, though
ie: Shale oil boom seen ending in May following price collapse: EIA <real headline
From this tidbit you can conclude that shale contains oil.
ie: There’s a reason limestone is so heavily damaged by acid rain. Calcium carbonate rapidly reacts with hydrochloric acid to form calcium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide.
From this line from a chemistry site shows that "A sedimentary rock that reacts with HCL" is limestone.
Case closed.

Since I'm done with Science Olympiad for the season (no nationals this year, hmph)...
Does the official fossil list usually change from year to year, or is it mostly the same things that were on it the year before?

Most of it should remain unchanged. It cycles out with Rocks every 3 years, so I think the list changes between cycles, but not within them. (Example: 2015 differs from 2011 by a few minor specimens, but shouldn't change between 2015 and 2016)coprolite_dipstick wrote:Since I'm done with Science Olympiad for the season (no nationals this year, hmph)...
