My partner and I DESPISE the Audubon one. :/ It doesn't give you info in a very compact way. The font is small, tabbing it makes you want to rip your hair out and cry... We prefer the Smithsonian one but we don't have the Simon and Schuster one... the Smithsonian one is just nicer. The pictures are on the same page as the info which are laid out in a very uniform way. The bad thing is that it lacks several (okay, a lot) of the fossils on the list. I think assuming that Binder=Best Friend Forever will just have to do for this event.

Simon and Schuster book is the one that I used last year, for this year I don't know if I will use that same book again or use this $7.00 book that for being so small and easy to read has a lot of good information. I got this book to read while i have free time at school. For me its the perfect book and I put it in my laptop bag and carry it to all of my classes. The S&S in my opinion is the best one but the one I have is a little dated [have one from 1986 I think that was the year it was printed]. The best part of that book is set up how it classes them symbols from what kind of ecosystem they would have lived in. I know if you want to buy all three it is a little costly, so go to a book store and go to science section and look at the fossil books [there are many more than the three that people mainly use]. Best advice I could give anyone that still has no idea what book they should get is to look at a variety before you make your decision of what you want to use.

I have to agree that the audubon is awful with picture id and has nothing on vertebrae(About 30 pages on all of it.) But for having good info on all invertebrates except foramnifera makes it the best guide.

I have said a few times that I have no more test to take [have done all on the 09 test exchange] is anyone else willing to make homemade test to put on the test exchange [I have Regional's in 21 days and this is the time were I cram all the information/ and do as many practice questions as I can but I used up the ones on this web page]. I am willing to write one in the upcoming week after I finish my upcoming school exams. I tried to remember some of the questions that were asked last year at my state compaction and will put some of those questions along with new ones that I have used to quiz my partner with.

Have you tried any of the tests on this site?

Thank you I almost forgot about that website and they have posted one new test since I was there too.
The fossil list just says Diatoms, but how depth have people gone? I have pictures of almost all the common shapes that the Diatoms come in has anyone ever seen a question about diatoms on the test?

Actually, I have. We were given a some diatoms under a microscope, asked what the type and name of the rock would be called (Diatomite), the chemical makeup of the rock (SiO2), and were asked to give 4 reasons why it was an index fossil.

How do you tell if a fossil was preserved by replacement, permineralization, and recrystalization? I know the definitions but if given a fossil I can never tell which one it is. Also, are casts and molds considered trace fossils? One of my coaches gave me notes on modes of preservation that said they were, but everything else I have found (including the wiki on this site) have placed them in different categories.

I am having some difficulty finding some information for the sponges that are on fossil list [can’t find the class or order] there is not much information about these two sponges to the best ability to searching. I am relying on general sponge information to fill in the blanks in my fossil book. Does anyone have any good web pages to find sponge information from?

Have you tried the paleobiology database?
