Heh, McMaster Carr :P

Specifically, the front axle is titanium and the frame is carbon fiber, I'm working on getting a rear axle made in titanium but I don't know if it'll be in in time for regionals. Either way it'll only be about 25g lighter than the current axle.

I haven't been able to run it with this body yet, the old vehicle that was 500g (ABS frame) was running about 3.4 seconds to do the 8m with a push rod launcher. I rebuilt the launcher and I'm hoping to finish it up this week, it should go really fast.

(Also, remember the time this year is just counted over the 8m interval, not the run distance)

So what kind of times are you seeing with these super light cars??

Our wheels weigh 100g a piece! We get about 4.5-4.7s at 11.7m but it stops on a dime with hardly any skid. Our car was close to 400g with CD wheels but, no matter what kind of rubber we put around them, our skid was just awful.
Don't like the stock stop you! Go to amazon and look stuff up. But if you car is doing nicely without it, which based on your time seems to be doing fine, don't worry about it. Just make your car the best car with your materials. Have faith in your car, name your car, love your car. Our team named our car Wobbly Wheel because of the wobbly wheel it has. but that hasn't stopped it from placing at invitationals!

wow, 100grams!
The most benefit would seem from spring launcher..the car would really fly :D
I dont believe I would be able to make a spring launcher, so I'm just building a pulley launcher.
I'd love to see a spring launcher in action at competition tho..or even videos :)

Spring mechs will be interesting to see! I can't wait until future competitions roll around to see the interesting designs. that is one thing i seriously love about this event just looking at the other interesting designs and how people took their approach at it. It's so awesome! :D Hopefully our pulley is good!

Just to be clear then, based on the clarification that just came out, would that also mean that a braking pad mechanism is also illegal, since it wasn't already in contact with the floor before launch?

Yeah, but that's been illegal since the rules came out :P

Oh...I will be sure to read the rules more carefully. must have missed that somehow.

I just bought three different sizes for the threaded rods. What size do you guys use?

At first, i thought i might as well go with a smaller size for less mass; I figured I could come up with ways to address the friction. But then I realized that wthe wingnut would more quickly travel the length of the smaller rods than the larger rods.

Smaller as in shorter or smaller diameter? It'll travels slower on smaller diameter rods typically because standard threads increase in tpi as the diameter decereases.

sorry. I was being...unperceptive? My mind literally blanked out for a second. Yeah, i meant in terms of smaller length. But regardless of the size/length, I didn't realize the different pitches :P

Oh, yeah, length really doesn't have much to do with pitch :P just use whatever length fits your vehicle and allows the wingnut to travel far enough. It won't move any faster/slower based on long the rod is.
