Will the score be counted as negative if the voltage comes out as negative or will the judges score it as a positive

The voltage only comes out negative when the turbine is connected with reverse polarity/spins the wrong way, right? I'm guessing it would count as a positive, if so, but not certain.

So sorry, I didn't see the little "m" on the voltmeter...

That's ok. It would be pretty cool if you COULD generate that many volts...

Just wondering, if one were to increase the resistance wired in a setup, would the relative voltage go up (for all teams, of course) on that device due to ohms law? Or am I interpreting something wrong here?

Anyway, I hope our experiences come in handy for all levels (student, coach, and event supervisors). It was considerable work, but it was fun too.
Thanks for the report- not too many proctors think to do anything like this!

My husband and I are judging and running the wind for B and C next weekend at TSU. Where is the information found that the students are supposed to know for the exam? We are having trouble trying to get the cd mounted to the motor and not much time to buy and have something sent to us. Any ideas? thanks for posting.

The general topics are listed inf section 4.l. of the Wind Power rules. As event supervisor it's up to you to to create a test the covers those topics.

Not sure what you mean by 'getting the CD mounted to the motor' The blade assemblies the competitors bring to the tournament will all have a CD already as part of them. You just need to have a CD mount hub connected to the motor (which is what is found in any common cd player). We posted a new document on the Soinc.org Wind Power pages recently that shows example testing setups.

Try these - you can have them in one day! The cd clips right in.

And I wanted to share some observations with the coaches (as well as any students that may be reading this) from regionals
This morning I had to tell a substantial number of teams at impound that they were not within design rules, and had a whole lot of (avoidable) last minute fixups going on...
Biggest problem?? oversize devices - teams aren't reading the instructions about "Maximum radial distance" or they don't understand what that means...
How their coaches can help: get 2 pieces of posterboard.
Draw a 20cm radius (40cm diameter) circle on one- label that "B".
Draw a 14cm radius (28cm diameter) circle on the other- label that C"
Have your "B" (middle school) level team place their device in the center of the "B" circle
Have your "C" (high school) level team place their device in the center of the "C" circle
Any part of the device touches or crosses the circle - you know the device is going to be a tier 2 unless its fixed.
Please have them trim it to size before they come to competition.
    Thanks!

Yeah, I was very close to being one of those people. Our blades were very close (about 1nm lol) to the max length...

1st place though, so it worked! :D
