See here.

Has anyone else encountered the issue where as the lever arm slaps down, it jerks the vehicle off course? For me, it results in a 10cm difference which is huge. I've tried using foam to cushion the arm as it drops down to no avail. Any tips?
As shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umiteINqbz4&t=127s

the lever are is attached to another string on the vehicle that stops it when it is perpendicular to the ground. This way the vehicle will jerks a bit less

How long is your lever arm, and what is it made of?

Hmm. I was thinking maybe you had a heavy or long arm, but if it’s that light I’m not sure. At what angle of the lever arm’s descent does the string leave the axle? It could be that your string is too short or your lever arm too long, and as a result the string is coming off the axle while the lever arm still has a long way to go downward. If so, the mousetrap would propel the lever arm down with no resistance from the string, making it snap much harder.

If I add a cup catch on my car does that count in the 50cm x50cm measurements?

Thank you so much!

No, because the 50.0cm x 50.0cm restriction only applies to your wheels/treads.

In the rules it specifies that the car and the cup must be touching at all times. If my car is smaller than 50x50cm does this mean that I can start the car at the end of the box and let it run then right at the starting point it can push the cup? I’ll try to make a google drawing of some sort to explain my question.

I believe the car has to be touching the cup at the vehicle start point, so when you set the mousetrap it should be touching the cup at that point.

To supplement this, the "box" is only for the purposes of making sure the vehicle is not tiered. If the event supervisor does have a physical "box" or some other measuring device it will likely only be used at impound to check the car's dimensions; it won't actually be present on or near the track.
