In the rules, it says the writer may not touch the model at all. Obviously if the sup says it's okay, you can get away with it, but technically according to the rules it's not allowed.
...i really need to start reading the rules...this may explain our 10th place finish at states. does anyone know if you get penalized or DQed for touching the object?

is the rule to penalize or to DQ? Because if its to penalize i had no idea and it definitely hurt us. If its to DQ then my proctors didnt know it was a rule...

I don't think it specifically says DQ in the rules, so probably just a penalty. Besides, they are required to tell you if they're going to DQ you (not that they always do).

So then, other then touching it, can you get out of your chair to look at it? (I feel stupid to ask)

so then even though this is a much bigger competition they can't provide a similar structure for everyone to look at individually?

At our regionals, it wasn't individually, it was one per group. The model was at the center and I couldn't see part of it because to was on another side.

Gosh, that makes it a lot harder then. Wait, if you had to crowd around it, could you move around to see the model from different points of view?
