I remember one of our practice sessions... the end result looked nothing like the original. Anyway, what do you think would be some commonly misinterpreted phrases that a builder could confuse from the writer's instructions? I'm going to make a list so that we can be prepared for next year and I was just looking for suggestions from people who have more experience in this event than I do. :)
It depends on what materials you are using. With knex make sure that you specify what type of connection it is (through or in, by our terminology). For twisted pipe cleaners say which way it turns. Make sure that it is obvious whether you are describing a previous connection or telling a new one.

Also, make sure you put a you will need section at the top. We literally just did a practice run and it appears that we were missing a piece and so our doer person got confused.

Thank you, everyone. I'm actually looking forward to the practice sessions that will follow. :D Hopefully I'll have the same partner.

Good luck, then!

Are there any materials we could practice with to prepare? What did they use at County? State? Even Nationals?

It depends on the county, state, and year. All states and counties have their own supervisors who like different materials. In NY they usually use building toys, but it might be different in California. At nationals it is much more likely to be random junk, but it has also been knex.

There have been a good amount of nats competitions that have used Googleplex, and it's a fairly challenging material to build with. Try it out.

The problem with googolplex is that it isn't made anymore and it was only ever made in one state, so it is very difficult to find. If you know of someplace to get them, please share.

Googleplex? Never heard of it, sounds fun though.

Just so you know, it is actually spelled "googolplex". Thought that might help to find it. But like I said, it is extremely difficult to find.
