I'd actually expected to see more of disease identification and such, like you said, but both of my tests (invites and regionals) have only had a couple questions on the diseases, if any - most are about the characteristics of the microbes (all of the extra stuff you listed in your virus example). I've seen a bit of an emphasis on microscopes, as well, though maybe that's just Illinois.

Do the tests usually just focus on the different types of microbes and diseases they cause, or do they also include specific information about each microbe? For example, would we only need to know what a virus is, or also virus reproduction, different types of viruses (retroviruses, DNA vs RNA viruses, etc), chemistry aspects of viruses, and evolution of viruses?
They could ask anything, so learn the general things first and then if you have time learn the specifics.

You should also have plenty of room on your cheat sheet to write the more specific things if you won't be able to remember them (It would be scary if you could remember all of it, I know I couldn't XD)

I'm just reading the relevant sections of a bio textbook to get an idea of it. On my note sheet I'll probably just put diagrams of the microbes, general characteristics, and a list of the diseases with the type of microbe that causes them and some symptoms/cures.

microbe mission is really confusing me. all of our tests seem to be different and they all have seemingly random questions. We thought we failed the invitationals test, but we got third

It's because a different person writes the test in each state, so the focus will be different each time.

Has anyone been given a picture of a symptom of a disease and asked to ID the disease and/or answer questions about it?

Surprisingly, I haven't. I was sort of expecting to... I haven't been asked much of anything on diseases yet, only a question here and there on something really basic, like, "The microbe that causes [disease] is a... a)fungus b)bacteria c)..." etc.

You could be shown a bullseye rash (Lyme's), a swollen neck (mumps), a rash (smallpox, chickenpox, measles, etc.), a nasty foot (athlete's foot), ringworm.
