tbh I don't really know since I didn't look too much into it other than a quick google search but I'm pretty sure its math rather than art lol

Hmm.... true, I just found it an easier way to describe it than saying "using a bunch of straight lines to draw a parabola." I see it a lot in string art, so that's why it was my first thought when I googled it.
