Per twig from a few pages ago. He mentions more than just where they branch, and I think he does a good job explaining.

How many times do I have to answer this? (this is probably my 4-5th time answering the same question, so don't ask this again)
Look at the veins. Platanus has 3 main veins that branch into two separate veins, and Acer does not have these branching veins.
Another way to tell is by the flowers and also the shape of the leaf. It's just that simple.
Twig mostly mentioned the branching veins (which are not given in this specimen) and I can’t seem to distinguish between
Acer and
Platanus based on the shape of the leaves. Any other tips?

That particular specimen only has 3 points at the end of the leaf. I have never seen an acer with less than 5. It's definitely not surefire, but that's my last resort before guessing between the 2.

I’ve seen
Acer with three lobes but I’ve only ever seen
Platanus with five lobes. I don’t think there’s a way to distinguish for that specimen.

Oof, yeah I'm clueless (fossils isn't a strong event of mine).

Shape is probably not a reliable way of distinguishing Acer and Platanus, but I don't really know how to distinguish them without the bottom portion of the leaf.

Have any of you seen non-leaf fossils of Populus on tests?

No I haven't, dchen22. Sorry about the late reply I just saw this now.
