Why don't we just use common names? We're allowed a list for the competition, so it's not as if we need to have the scientific nomenclature committed to memory.

Knowing them by memory could save you a few seconds at each station during station-based entomology tests, and they add up. You might be able to answer one extra question per station that ends up helping your score alot.

Yeah - finding the insect on the list is a drag. And this is practice for the tests; they will definitely always ask for scientific name, and they only might ask for common name.
If you want to ask a question, you can ask for common name. That's not a problem. But most people will probably ask for scientific, and rightly so, because it's what we're required to know.
