I love this idea :D It'll also increase some participation in this thread, which is kind of lacking at times.

I'm actually thinking we could do it in posting games/general chat, but I suppose it could be here too.

Erm, I'm not in ornithology, but could anyone in here tell me what type of OWL this is (or if you guys don't know owls, don't bother, it's fine).

I live in New York, and around 10 PM I hear "Hoo-hoo-hoo, hoo"

I haven't actually seen this owl. Anyone have a clue?

Based only on the song, I would guess Great Horned Owl (more likely) or Barred Owl (doubtful- Barred Owls usually hoot eight or so times in a row). Both live year-round in most of the Eastern US, including NY.

Yeah, it's probably the Great Horned, which is better known for its ''hooing" than other species. The Barred Owl is more of a "who-cooks-for-you-all" pattern. If you could give us any more details that would be helpful.

I like the posting game idea!!! :)
No matter what the experiment's result, there will always be someone eager to:(a) misinterpret it(b) fake it, or (c) believe it supports his own pet theory.

a posting game sounds great, but only if everyone is a good sport and doesn't reverse search the pics

Ornithology is an event in which 2 partners compete. Most of the time at regional competitions, you are given a picture of a bird and asked to name it (various taxonomy-i.e., family, order) and answer general questions about the species. They also often play bird calls and you are asked to do the same thing. This can be tricky, as some birds sound almost the same. If you are wondering what birds and calls will be shown, go to the main Science Olympiad page (soinc.org) and head to the Ornithology page for B/C. Then click on Bird List 2010. Many other helpful links are shown. I recommend getting a bird guide (I use Peterson's- make sure that it's the latest edition) for those extra questions. You can also have a double-sided, 8.5"11 "cheat sheet" with information that will also help you. Good luck! :D

I like the idea of a game (good way to prepare)! This is kind of a technology question, but does anyone know how to get audio (bird calls) off the internet and onto a CD? I'd like a mixtape of sorts to listen to when I'm traveling or something.
