I have a question about scoring in this event. In order to fall in tier 1, do two rockets have to be launched? If so, can the same student build two rockets different rockets for launch, or can this only be done by two different students? There doesn't appear to be any clarification in the rules for scoring for a single rocket attempt or how a single rocket would be scored. Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yah, I would think so since tier 1 requires you to have 2 surviving eggs, so you would need to have two launches. In general the same student can build both rockets and is likely the case for a lot of teams. I think if you only have 1 launch, then the most you would get is 1 surviving egg (tier 2) or if the egg didn't survive, then it would be tier 3.

You need two rockets. One launch per rocket. If you only bring one rocket, automatic tier 2. Each rocket's time is measured and the times are added together to produce your score.

Does anyone have any projected times for this year? Due to the smaller bottle and egg, i feel like the times would be a lot less then last year. Somewhere in the 8-10 sec range.

In 2012 the nationals winner flew each rocket at 21 seconds. Nowhere near 8.

In both 2015 and 2016 the top times were around 40-50 seconds (combined two flights). The 2015 scores are posted on the forums somewhere (search chalker's posts).

In 2016 at Nationals in Wisconsin with a 2l bottle the gold medal rockets were 17.04 sec and second rocket was 25.24 second for a winning score of 42.28. Sixth place was 15.30 and second rocket was 16.13 for a time of 31.43. So I will leave it up to all of you to debate what a national medal time will be with the reduction in the pressure vessel to a max of 1l.

Thanks for the info. I remember that the top team in 2015 was around 50 seconds, and the third and second place teams were right around 45-48 seconds (can't remember exactly).

After 2016 and the addition of the egg the times dropped off. In 2015 the gold medal winners were 50.18 seconds combined and to medal in 6th it took a 42.19. Dropping to a 1l bottle and no other changes my best guess would be around a 14-15 second rocket at 60psi would put you in a competitive place nationally. Im sure someone will still break 20 seconds though. Happens every year!
