changes in exposure produce changes in outcome
changes in exposure do not necessarily produce changes in outcome
false association, results from sampling error/bias

[b]Horizontal transmission[/b] occurs from one individual to another in the same age group/generation.
[b]Vertical transmission[/b] occurs when a disease causing agent is passed from a parent to offspring.
[b]Iatrogenic transmission[/b] is a result of medical procedures (e.g. injection of material into one's body).
