I agree with you. It took me a little while to develop good time management in forensics ... but yes, astronomy is hard because of the information needed for it, and boomilever is also pretty hard because it takes a lot of time and caution to build a good one.

It depends on what define as 'hard'.
If you mean information wise, then events like Forestry, Astronomy, Fermi questions, or basically any event not taught in school as a class or part of a class would meet that criteria.
If you mean placing wise, then that would go to Chem Lab and Anatomy. Those events have full blown courses dedicated to them (AP Chem, AP Bio, etc.) and with and it doesn't help that there is a lot of information to them.

I did some dendrology (tree identification specifically) and dendrochronology (dating with tree rings) in Earth Science... It certainly wouldn't have been enough for the event, though.

I think the hardest event are events like keep the heat, where you need to build a device, and score well on a test. Although you have a binder, it's the test can still be incredibly hard.

I think Keep the Heat is hard for a middle school student because thermodynamics is more difficult than heredity (since most middle schools teach basic genetics). Also, thermodynamics has so much formulas with new concepts and skills, like the Gibbs equation. Also, Thermodynamics (C division) may be easier since it is taught in many high schools.
Just my opinion.
And also it is easier than my other events (Shock Value, Meteorology, and Heredity.)

I'd have go agree with you that helicopters can get pretty frustrating but I'd say the hardest events are identifying events. For example rocks and minerals, forestry, ornithology. The fact that they are usually done in stations means that you really have to know your stuff. You don't have time to look through a binder or cheat sheet. Rocks and minerals is one of my favorite events even though its tough. I also did ornithology and I heard someone had a mental breakdown during that event in a competition.

But I agree with the events like ornithology. There is just so much information to learn! However, they do allow a lot of material at the competition. I'd say Mission Possible for B, or Forestry? Events like Metric Mastery and WIDI require a lot of preparation, though.
And anyway, don't act like you don't enjoy helicopters. It gives you guys your advantages at meetings. Especially Fridays.

My RFTS partner now has a fear of Fermi Questions. He read some of them, and his reaction is that you can get one question right and medal.

At most competitions, you could probably get 3/5 (1 off so none right) and medal.
