The cleavage&fractures seem to be different
No matter what the experiment's result, there will always be someone eager to:(a) misinterpret it(b) fake it, or (c) believe it supports his own pet theory.

I guess I see what you mean; perhaps I'll study the rocks with high variety in color more when I have samples in addition to pictures.

or other memorization/taxa events??

This is my first year doing Rocks and Minerals; last year was my first year of science olympiad, and I did Ornithology and Fossils to at least some degree of success. It's not easy :P

i did orno last year, and this is my 3rd year
maybe try grouping the minerals/rocks you think are similar and then find the differences between them
and your right -- its not easy (though in my opinion, sometimes this is easier than trees, but birds were easier than all of these...)

Anybody know the best field guide to rocks and minerals?? I know SO likes the Smithsonian Ones, any others??
