I guess I see what you mean; perhaps I'll study the rocks with high variety in color more when I have samples in addition to pictures.

This is my first year doing Rocks and Minerals; last year was my first year of science olympiad, and I did Ornithology and Fossils to at least some degree of success. It's not easy

i did orno last year, and this is my 3rd year
maybe try grouping the minerals/rocks you think are similar and then find the differences between them
and your right -- its not easy (though in my opinion, sometimes this is easier than trees, but birds were easier than all of these...)
