This would be alot of work, but it would be phenominal and not impossible to build.
The springs would have to be metal though, as his wood ones wouldnt be able to re set the valves with any speed.

What do you guys think? Possible?
And any other ideas on what instruments to build?

Is there an impound for this event? I was looking through the rules and jotting down the eye protection and impounds, and I don't think it specified, so I'm a little curious.

Last year there wasn't an impound. (If there was, every tournament I went to ran it wrong)

No impound. Typically events only have an impound component if there is an 'unknown variable' that the event supervisor selects for all competitors. Sounds of Music doesn't have such a thing.

The last time I did this event, we had to build a percussion and a wind instrument so I'm a bit unclear about building string instruments.

Am I able to use say, cello strings? Or does buying professional quality strings violate the rules?

Rule 3b wrote: The only exception is that strings of any type (instrument or others) are permitted.
To me, it seems pretty unambiguous that professional strings are indeed allowed. However, it may be advisable to seek a second opinion just to be sure.

If I'm understanding your question correctly, check the last sentence in 3b. It says that any strings are permitted.

for people who did sounds last year: what kinds of questions did they ask you last year?

The test I put on the test exchange contains a lot of the questions I remember being asked throughout the year. It's a good place to start.

(Would have a link, but it's too late for me to remember how the test exchange tags work on here. w/e, it should be at the very bottom of the exchange)

I think my team is doing some simple instruments like a copper pipe xylophone and some sort of aerophone, maybe a recorder-ish one. I'm not exactly sure, but we dont have many people, so we can't spend too much time on each event.
