Whoa, I moved from Stroudsburg Middle School and could have gone to Stroudsburg HS if I didn't move to Louis Pasteur MS in Queens.
Goodbye Science Olympiad, until next year.

Cool, what grade? Are you one of those families that moved here then moved back?Tramsarran wrote:Whoa, I moved from Stroudsburg Middle School and could have gone to Stroudsburg HS if I didn't move to Louis Pasteur MS in Queens.
Anyway, there's a really big difference between our jr high and high school team. Like the vibe, if that makes sense. The jr high seems more focused and more motivated/positive. So it also makes sense that the jr high has more test offs than the high school.

Yep, I'm one of those families. 7th grade and my homeroom teacher for 6th was Mr.Perinotti. Two kids from my class did SO last year.
Goodbye Science Olympiad, until next year.

Re: How does your school do tryouts for the competition team
In the beginning of the school year, everyone who wants to be in SO goes to the SO meetings and the coach explains what SO is all about and how it works. Around November-December the coach starts eliminating people. At first he only choses 22 kids that might get to be in the final 15 and the substitute. He choses the kids who he thinks works the hardest and does the most work. We all turn in some tests for our events to him and he looks at them to see how well we're doing. He also tries to find who the most dilligent people are from watching us in the meetings.
About 80 kids show up in the beginning of the year but only 16 make the team.

So you just moved back last year? I know them, and a few other 7th graders joined if I'm remembering their grades correctly..Tramsarran wrote:Yep, I'm one of those families. 7th grade and my homeroom teacher for 6th was Mr.Perinotti. Two kids from my class did SO last year.
80 kids? Wow, your school could make a B team instead of kicking so many kids off the team.
Our school usually has 20-30 people, so most of us get on the team. And even if we're not on the official team, we're either an understudy, or we compete in MVCs (only C division, a local tournament thingy)

Re: How does your school do tryouts for the competition team
Yeah, around 80 kids showed up, but after the first 3-4 meetings it went down to about 60. The room was packed and most of the time we brought in chairs, sat on the floor or use two classrooms. We definitely wanted to have another team and my coach had asked for that but he said finacially the school could not support two SO teams, especially if both teams made it to state. Maybe it'll be different next year. Did you go to SMS or was it not built yet when you were in middle school? I know that two kids in my class last year took the Activity Bus down the the Junior HIgh for SO meetings and they were 6th grade. I don't mean to be mean and share names but I will anyway then I'll edit the post.
Do you know Aubrey Flemming and Mehul Patel? They were on the SO team last year and they made it to States. They told me about it and then I heard about SO at my school.
I moved back over the summer.

Oh, that makes sense. You could always do fundraisers if you have enough people that really want to compete.Tramsarran wrote:Yeah, around 80 kids showed up, but after the first 3-4 meetings it went down to about 60. And yeah, I was the first class to have all 3 years at the Middle school.
Yes, I know both them. :] Especially since we were on the same team last year. Did you try out for the team last year? I remember a few people that joined but quit soon after.

Yeah, fundraisers are what we need. Wow, I'm surprised you know Aubrey and Mehul. Can you tell them Troy says hi if you ever see them? I wonder what they're response would be since I never saw them since June 2010. I never tried out for SO because I didn't know what it was. I saw those green posters around the school saying Science Olympiad tryouts. I heard about it after the tryouts were done though and never thought it could be fun. I know Aubrey talked about it a lot and after you read this I think I should remove the post from here.
Goodbye Science Olympiad, until next year.

Anyone who wants to join can join. We only had one team this year, but next year we're shooting for two. The team that went to state this year was the first time from our school to do so, so we'll have the same team for Varsity next year. We'll probably take in two more students (juniors next year) who will be a great benefit. Honestly, it's so hard to imagine two teams, because everyone's become so close this year.

That's exactly the same here, interestingly.lolliexdd wrote:Cool, what grade? Are you one of those families that moved here then moved back?Tramsarran wrote:Whoa, I moved from Stroudsburg Middle School and could have gone to Stroudsburg HS if I didn't move to Louis Pasteur MS in Queens.
