What makes a good team?

For anything Science Olympiad-related that might not fall under a specific event or competition.

There's always the kid that isn't seen as a genius, but medals like everyone else on the team. Really, a great coach goes a long way, especially in Division B. I think the most important factor in a team is its cohesiveness. Don't forget to have fun in SciOly. There's no use if everyone is practically riding solo in their events.

I would have to disagree...full teams of 15 generally have an advantage over say, 10-person teams, because each person has to do less events, and therefore can devote more time to each event. Note that this is only in general, and that, depending on motivation and ability, it is very possible for a smaller team to beat a larger team.

rather than agreement or disagreement, it's more like somewhere in between.
Usually if the team is large, they tend to do better because:
1. they have more support
2. possibly bigger budget
3. more selective
- I mean if there are more people in your team, the more chance you have at finding good people
by good i meant: motivated, smart, etc.

So generally what matters IS the motivation and willingness of the people who work together in achieving their goal!
But it tends to happen more in larger teams :)

Basically what whadk said. A larger team has more people that can be good at an event.

Though with a larger team, it is harder to choose your team, because if you have 30 people that are all good at one event, there is no way that those people can cover 8 more events after the competing team is chosen.

Still, I think that a larger team is usually better.

It's all probability. Maybe 1 in 2 people are considered "good". 1 in 10 are "amazing". In a team of 30 people, there's more chance of more people being "good" and "amazing". In a 17 person team, there's a less chance. That's why larger teams usually are better.

Also, it isn't always the good people that make a good team. The coach's motivation itself can be vital to how well the team does. The coach always needs to be motivated for hard-work and encouraging. Also, the coach should be devoted (lol too strong?) to the team so that she doesn't forget any important such as room changes. A few (maybe a lot) of encouraging words for the team could be what changes everything.

Something that makes students actually put effort into the Science Olympiad. Example: Including the Sci. Oly. in the school curriculum so that students will perform better.

2012 New York Div B States
2012 Lower Hudson Div B Regionals

Seriously though, if I posted a photo of our Science Olympiad's room, you'd think that pigs lived here. :|

But yeah, a dedicated team and coach goes a long way. That's why a bunch of us are sitting here during our spring break right now.
