Sorry for the late reply! I can't speak much for this event because I haven't done it before, but I should say that you shouldn't feel discouraged because you're not really supposed to know this stuff from school (less common knowledge?) Since you get an entire binder for this event, I would say compile as much information as possible (I used Wikipedia) for each form of rock. Before you even do that, though, make sure you're solid with identification. I'm sure someone else can help with that.
