Sorry for the late reply! I can't speak much for this event because I haven't done it before, but I should say that you shouldn't feel discouraged because you're not really supposed to know this stuff from school (less common knowledge?) Since you get an entire binder for this event, I would say compile as much information as possible (I used Wikipedia) for each form of rock. Before you even do that, though, make sure you're solid with identification.
