Re: Corruption Ring in Science Olympiad
On the flip side, our team is usually mostly white, and we still haven't made states.

Soz, I've never been to nats. Everything I say is solely based off of my own personal experience at states.Kokonilly wrote:Did you really just say/write that?winneratlife wrote:White kids win in my opinion because, frankly, asians spread themselves way too thin. Trying to pile on swimming or tennis with math competitions with SciO with Quizbowl with other things doesn't work out.
The bottom line is that it's not just white people that win at SciO (have you seen the Troy team? Not trying to profile here, but seriously!) and any conspiracy theories are completely off the mark. People win because they work hard, really want it, and are resourceful.

Re: Corruption Ring in Science Olympiad
There defiantly is no force that the top teams have over another team... if you have dedication work hard study all the material you can beat one of those so called super unbeatable teams. The same groups of teams do well every year because of coaches and students continue wanting to do well, these teams know what needs to be done so future students can learn from the experiences of the seasoned veterans. Look at baseball the Yankees spend by far the most money [over 206million 40 more than the next team] and the Yanks don’t always win the Giants won this year with just 98million half the Yankees yet they won. My point is regardless of the resources and money you put into an event they is always room to be beaten by some team that prepared equally well.
There is good motivation too this as well, I hate to say it but once I got to State I would make it my goal to beat 2 specific teams in my events because I knew as a team my team could have no chance to compete against them.

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure not every Asian spreads themselves too thin extra-curricular-wise *coughmecough*. Nice stereotyping there.winneratlife wrote:Soz, I've never been to nats. clash3608 wrote:Corruption ring in Science Olympiad? It might be true!! The same teams win every year, rich, private schools with white kids. These schools have the most money and I belive they are corrupting the judges and the highest powers in Science Olympiad! Please respond!!
DUDE they win because they study and try hard not because of bribing the judges their are no "steriods" in science olympiad. The money only comes into play because of the resources and the fact that they might have science olympiad as a class that is the only part that i see unfair

Re: Corruption Ring in Science Olympiad
Clearly this was a joke, and all of the accusations are false, however, there is a point that can be made here.
One of the big reasons the same teams make it to nationals year after year is because they know how awesome it is! Once a team has gone to nats they will be way more motivated then they have been in past years, so it takes a lot of determination for a different team to beat them. But I think that it is a perfectly fair system.

Now, I wouldn't say going to nationals will make you more motivated than, say, a close call. Trust me- I probably have more passion for SO than the majority of the country

Re: Corruption Ring in Science Olympiad
hahaha, WELLL almost our whole team is asian thank you very much, spare the 6 kids that aren't out of all 40-50 of us.winneratlife wrote:asians spread themselves way too thin. Trying to pile on swimming or tennis with math competitions with SciO with Quizbowl with other things doesn't work out.
AND our school isn't funded by anyone, (the school hardly even funds the team! :]) and we are NOT a private school
AND AND AND ... we were 8th in the Nation last year.
no the judges are NOT corrupt, yes it takes a HUGE passion and endurance, and efficiancy level and tolerance... oh wait back on topic
its all in the work, passion, and desire to win.
No matter what the experiment's result, there will always be someone eager to:(a) misinterpret it(b) fake it, or (c) believe it supports his own pet theory.

Re: Corruption Ring in Science Olympiad
It definitely comes down to work. I know I could work harder, but some other people on my team barely even work at all! And come on, race has nothing to do with this. It's not like it's Starcraft... lol
