I think the binder is fine. Why does it need to go?
Also, I doubt it will change as it is. My coach is pretty instrumental in the rules for this event, and he loves the binder.

Yeah, we were allowed notes in my Geo 113 final, and I fit the full geologic time scale, plus a ton of other useful fossil info (the class was The Earth Through Time, very similar to Fossils) on a 5 by 8 index card, written by hand.

The binder is still very necessary though, for ID purposes. Expecting someone to be able to ID every specimen AND remember it's time range, geographic range, diet, etc is ridiculous. It's ridiculous for the bio ID events, and it'd be even more ridiculous for fossils.

yea, but really, one shouldnt need a binder to solely ID it. the first two pages could be laid out like this
name time span features mode of life interesting facts.
that would be suffice for that.
the next three pages could contain everything else one needs

mr. vorwald? i met him at states; had a nice fossils-rocks and minerals-geology related talk with him.

Ok, for the sake of changing the subject:

Why we need a binder:
-Once we ID the specimens, we are usually asked questions about said specimens mode of life, diet, time range, trivial facts, morphology, etc.

That one reason enough can alone support why we need a binder. However, i do concur, the earth science/other important fossils related information (such as index fossil information, Symmetry, the major extinctions, important points in the timeline of life, etc) can be covered in less than 10 pages, max.

That's the same thing that happens in ornithology, but we don't have binders there.

Yes. He thinks that all id events should have a binder, and that using field guides only is a stupid idea. For this reason, we will most likely always have binders for fossils.

That's why I think that we should have binders. The events are more similar than not, and I think that a binder actually may be more helpful for Ornithology than for Fossils. The field guide alone may work for fossils enough, but Ornithology has so much information... that being said, I think binders are best for both, but if I could only have one or the other, I would have it for Ornithology.

the ornithology list has dozens more information than fossils. i agree, if only one event could have a binder, id give it to orni.

Exactly. However, I think it is very likely that Fossils will have one and Ornithology won't.
