If it's already passed the legislature and the governor says he is going to sign it, it's probably too late to fight against it. Your teachers may be willing to coach at least some of the time without being paid; depends on the teacher and their personal situation. Perhaps not as many practices- you may have to do more work on your own- but definitely don't let go of your team. Some teams are entirely student run, with no coaches at all, just some teachers willing to sign the paperwork.
We've never had glossy rulebooks either. We just got photocopies of the rules. And yes, the Governor said he would sign it... :x  The student run team may just work, if I get enough people to do it with me, which is unlikely... :x   :x :x

soobsession wrote:That's horrible! But don't give up yet, you still have you're right to petition. Like Random and a bunch of other people said, get Science Olympians from across the state to oppose the bill... and what winner said. Neighbors... friends... family... they can all help.

We just had a budget cut of 68% for our school. That's about a total loss of $5.6 million. Teachers are getting laid off. Parking prices for seniors are rising. People are getting demoted. The budget has already taken a toll on Science Olympiad this year. Our rulebooks weren't even glossy! They were xeroxed from the rulebooks that the coaches have. We have a pretty decent team and a good school, but now I'm getting scared fro SO too. :?

I hope something will change and you will still have SO next year. But have no fear, SCIENCE OLYMPIANS, UNITE!!!!! :ugeek:
Thanks for the suggestions, Soobsession, but I just this "instinctive feeling" that Science Olympiad is going to die next year...

I really don’t like the glossy rule book, most schools don’t buy a set of rules for everyone they just make copies. I made the copies this year for my team and my coach said make enough for one per person then print another to be sure [were down to one copy now in his room now].
now to a more serious thing that sad to hear that you may loose your SO program, one think to raise some funs is to do some fundraisers or seen if any local businesses are interested in sponsoring your team.

My school orders glossy rulebooks for everyone. I don't know why, but I like it.

I feel truly sorry for you. Science Olympiad is my life, and I can't imagine my life without it.
Maybe it won't die. But if it does, good luck finding a hobby. :(

Lucky! Yes. You should like it. Glossy rulebooks are just so... glossy...

EPO: At least you know what's going to happen. I don't know. With the recent budget cut, we don't know anything and we don't know which extra curriculars (if any) will be cut. I hate not knowing. That's the thing. Also, I compete on one of my states oldest and one of the better teams in the state (if I would say so myself :P ). It would be horrible to see SO go just because of some stupid budget cut.

soobsession, you are completely right. Science Olympiad should not be cut because of budget cuts. Sports are unaffected, and Science Olympiad is as much a team as them.

And not knowing is definitely the worst thing possible. There have been cuts at my school, but since we are a very successful team we probably won't get the worst of it.

Oh, my middle school is also cutting basketball and track. Talk about collateral damage...

My school probably has some cuts going for sports too, but I'm not athletic at all, so I have no idea.

Since our district has a horrible football team and 3 highly successful scio teams, I can only hope that they make the right decision.
