Re: We need a gender on our profiles!
It isn't difficult to implement. The State and Division sections are custom and gender would be no different from those. We just hadn't done it because it didn't seem pertinent. We'll see. Maybe have a poll or something, though I think everyone will just say "yes"

(You could also just let mods vote? I dunno...)

Even if something is commonly done in society, that doesn't make it acceptable. I can think of several examples and I'm sure others can too.Phenylethylamine wrote:The singular "they" has become widely accepted and is therefore effectively grammatically correct. It's less unwieldy than "s/he", that's for sure, but that could be another alternative if you object to "they"

By their very nature, languages exist as they are used. If everyone says "they" to refer to a non-gender-specific singular, it becomes an effective way of signifying that concept.freakofnature17 wrote:Even if something is commonly done in society, that doesn't make it acceptable. Re: We need a gender on our profiles!
If implemented, the gender option wouldn't necessarily have to be in that box that's next to every single post. (Like where your avatar, location, etc. are.) It could instead be an option that's visible when viewing a profile; similar to the age, occupation, and interests fields. Then it wouldn't have to be crowding up the small space next to every post, but it could be easily found out by clicking the username and viewing the profile.

I think this would be the best option. I'm actually of the opinion that "state" would be better there too.Celeste wrote:If implemented, the gender option wouldn't necessarily have to be in that box that's next to every single post. Re: We need a gender on our profiles!
it is not the way i think it should be (i use singular they all the time), but it is a general rule as in most languages that the word "he" is used as a neuter pronoun. or you could always use "it", though it is not recommended as it can be insulting or unpleasant to the ears to us the word "it" to describe a person.
