2. higher temperatures(near equator/tropics)
3. only the top of the lake mixes... I thought this was a freshwater topic?

1. coral, molluscs, crustaceans, etc.
2. Ca and Mg ions(what make the water hard) are removed, such as by replacing them with sodium(resin beads) or using lime(causing precipitation)
3. The organism stays in a planktonic larval stage for a long time, allowing it to disperse widely.
