I tend to think that team spirit and involvement is more of a factor than lots of coaching because if you are disengaged from SciOly and your team, you won't be motivated enough to study to succeed for the good of the team. If this isn't the case, though, and you value the teamwork aspect of SciOly, you'll be pushed to work harder so that your team does better. It's the students who drive the success of the team, not the coaches/mentors. Having frequent team-wide meetings will help with involvement and cooperation. Just my thoughts.

I agree with Locoholic. It’s great to have supportive coaches, but having a coach for every event like NewSciolyer mentioned definitely isn’t necessary. Our coaches will answer our questions if we ask (especially for builds), but the motivation is what really leads to success. Motivation seems to usually come if it’s competitive to get on the team.

Yeah, I agree, but I think the kids are what’s really important. For builds and some other events, the coaches can only get you so far. You have to really self study and find out by trial and error and really do your research and maximize your resources.

Tell me, by what characteristics do you define a good school or a bad one?

In the case of powerhouse schools, performance at competitions, especially nationals and high-level invitationals, is the main characteristic we use to tell how good a school is.
