Well for one, we're not grammar nazis; we simply know how to use the language effectively. Secondly, it is not strange to appreciate proper use of the English language.

It's not strange at all, for a few reasons, the primary being that in SciOly, all the math that you do has a purpose, a fundamental reason behind it, whereas in school you are just taught math in order to pass the next test. (unless you are me, in which case, you absolutely love math, and are trying to rush through multivariable calculus over the summer, and try to do linear algebra/ differential equations over next year)
Is it strange that when I do anything but work on my events for Science Olympiad -- including other STEM-related activities, such as robotics -- often, I can only think about my SciOly events and nothing else?

Yes, because that means Science Olympiad has taken over your life, but no because that's what should happen to a true Science Olympian.
