In smaller states, tournaments with fewer than 23 events being run is fairly common, as it is harder for them to get the number of volunteers required, since there are fewer teams providing them.

I guess. That's just unheard of in the ISO tournaments.

I would say Illinois does not qualify as a smaller state. ;)

Mounds View had 15 1st places, six 2nd places, and one 3rd place at state this year - the last of which was not counted toward their score, since MN State dropped each team's worst event. Including all events, their total score comes out to 30 points. Note that there were only 22 events, as Game On was not run.

In the super small and early states (say, Montana...isn't their State tournament in November or something?) are low or high scores more common?

I assume so as they have less competition. If stuff like this were happening in ISO or TXSO etc. this would be shocking and basically mean this team would have 1st in nationals most likely as competition in these states are hyper-aggressive.
