Dave from Freedom Flight models has a Chinook prototype that is getting fantastic times in an 8 foot ceiling. This will probably be a very competitive event. Building finesse will be ultra important.
PS, He got a few of his Ideas from Roy when that video clip was taken.
Based on the past, kits should be available in mid Oct.

I heard that too! Does anyone have any idea how big a space the model can safely be tested in without bumping all over the walls?

I'd imagine that it'd depend how well it is built; especially with a chinook-style helicopter, it'd be very important to make sure the that rotors are built evenly, and are balanced on both sides. Last year, I had trouble with my heli moving around a lot at the start of the season because my motor sticks were warped just a little bit, and my rotors weren't perfect either. But, by the end of the season, I learned to build them with a lot more precision, and during launch, it would basically go straight up, stick to one spot on the ceiling (for the most part), and come down spiraling in a small area.

Relative noob here when it comes to this event. Where do people typically buy good rubber from?

FAI is the most common place (since most other places basically just repackage FAI rubber anyway). Someone else can comment on the finer points, since I don't know them.

Yep, Unome is right, use FAI tan supersport rubber. They don't offer a great variety of widths on their site, however, so I suggest going to Dave Ziegler's freedomflightmodels.com, where he sells custom cut FAI rubber, or retrorc: http://retrorc.us.com/customwidthstrippedrubber.aspx. Note that the helicopters kit available on Dave's site at the moment is for last year's design - 2018 one is not out yet.

Also be sure to get a good lubricant (ArmorAll works well) for your rubber.

When the rules state that you must construct the rotors yourself, does that mean that you cannot use rotors built from a kit?

You can construct rotors using materials from a kit, per 3.a. Rotors constructed from a kit must not use any pre-glued joints or pre-covered surfaces, per 3.b.

If this were true Dave Ziegler wouldn't have FFM or a business and we would have been spending countless more hours :(

I think Dave is now taking preorders for the chinook design.
