I looked up the Alberts book, it looks like a pretty good resource but it's over 2000 pages long!? Do you recommend any especially good sections to read? I'm under a time constraint since tryouts for the team are in early November, and I have 2 other events to study for as well as the Brock book to read...

Tbh I'd recommend none of it for microbe. It's super dense and extremely detailed, and it's all on cell biology, not microbiology. I'd recommend some starter level material like Campbell or a microbiology textbook if you want something more difficult. If you want to read it for personal enjoyment, that's fine too

^^^, A lot of science teachers have an extra copy of Campbell’s lying around, so if you do a bit of asking around, you could probably find a copy to borrow

A fantastic book we use for this event is "Medical Microbiology" from Murray especially when studying the disease causing organisms. Easy to read. Lots of pictures.

It's hard to exactly say what the rule writer intended there but I believe the ambiguity is there for a reason. I would predict (and I could be wrong...) that the intent is you should understand some of the common microbiomes (such as human gut, soil, deep sea vent, etc...) that are commonly investigated. At least, that is how I would interpret it but is no way official.

Like Jon said, it can refer to a variety of things, but from what I’ve seen, it pretty much always tends to refer to human microbiomes rather than other plant/animals’ microbiomes
