Chromatography
Chromatography (with pens):
You have a piece of chromatography paper and a few centimeters/ .5 inches from the bottom put a dot with each pen. Make sure they are spread kind of far apart. Then put the bottom edge of the paper in the water. MAKE SURE THAT THE DOTS ARE NOT IN THE WATER! The water will then seep up the paper and pull the ink up with it, separating the colors. Let this run until the ink stops rising and the water level is past it. It is best to start it at the beginning of competition and let it run. Check on it throughout to make sure it doesn't run too far. The best way of leaving it alone is by putting water at the bottom of the beaker and stick the paper in against the side. Again, make sure the dots are not below the water. Just leave it there as long as it is not sliding down into the water.

Re: Crimebusters?
there is no way emerson will beat BC. idk where emerson is anyway. but the only ones in BC's way is sewickly, and we've long ago accepted that fact. we are BEAST and you better believe you are gonna see us in this event in nationals. maybe. possibly. im just a little hyper right now, so if i come off overzealous, that why.

Here are some solutions to the problems you might be having with your chromo:
1. Your dot of ink should be ABOVE the water line when you start, not in the water. The water should seep up into the dot naturally after a few seconds.
2. You should have your dots on separate strips, not all on the same piece of filter paper.
I hope that helps:)

Re: Crimebusters?
You can have it on one sheet if you place the dots farther apart, not right next to each other. I would recommend figuring out how to do it on one sheet because that is generally how you will see it at competition. Once you are able to run one dot on one sheet you will know about how big it is and you can space everything accordingly. Good Luck!wattsworder wrote: 2. Re: Crimebusters?
another thing to remember with chromo is to start it early on in the event, as it takes the longest time to finish
just let it do its thing while you identify stuff....

Also, make sure you keep an eye on it so it soesn't over-go and then it won't compare correctly to the sample. So look at the sample, and take them out when they are at the same height.
