all ur comments are good. but they all defeat the purpose of science olympiad. These events are not meant to be easy, especially at state and national levels, so "not so smart people" rele shudn't be on the team if they can't handle somewhat hard events. And if ur athletic, then ur physical abilities shudn't be brought into the studies of science.
top 4 events i want:
1. cell bio
2. anatomy
3. ecology
4. forensics

I don't know how anyone could both be in a situation where they had enough events to stop them from going outside for a little while and being active, and also be energetic enough that their "hyperness" would cause them problems in focusing. You don't need an event to relieve stress. In fact, it's probably actually worse, because then some stress would be introduced into your fun and relaxation because it counts toward your score.

Um, yes, we can. Just because a dish has some sugar in it doesn't make it a dessert... and just because Pentathlon has some science in it doesn't make it a good SciO event.
emilyy18 wrote: how many of you people who hate pentathlon have actually been on the event? and competed?
I have never competed in Pentathlon, but I've done full practice events for it... My coach wanted me to do the event, but I flatly refused.
hmm true that, i guess, i mean its not exactly the best event, but having competed in it, i must say i did thoroughly enjoy it.

"Not so smart people" probably aren't especially interested in Science Olympiad.
some "not so smart people" do this to get out of school for the 1 or 2 wks. that the school lets them off early to "study"

but i don't mind the event b/c i enjoyed it

here is my problem:
why are all of you making a big deal over an event that alot aren't even in
1. you can't judge how "good" the event is if haven't even done it (like alot of you)
(can't write a review for a movie you haven't seen)
2. if you sucked at this event, get off the forum because all your going spout is bias opinions
3.i had fun in this event and maybe it is not everyone's favorite event, but i have it ranked right under Fossils on my list
4. if they are going to cycle it out next year with another event, why are you even bothering about getting rid of it?
5. It is good to have an easy event every now and then; it is a whole lot better than being bombarded with 5 events at state or regional and have a easy event thrown in to calm you down
6. Let's say a group of sci olyers don't like Fossils b/c of an unclear reason (take the hint you all don't agree on the same dislike of this event) so i start a thread that asks for it to be discontinued, but you really likes the event so you don't want it to be gone. What are you gonna do?
7. Seriously, what can we do that will get rid of any event?

However, we have read the rules, heard reports of the activities involved, and (at least in my case) done practice events. In some sense, only someone who hasn't done the event can judge objectively how "good" it is. Just because it's fun, doesn't mean it's a "good" event, so if you've done the event and enjoyed it you may want it to be continued, even if on some level you realize that it's not the point of SciO (in fact, when I was doing those practice events, I had a lot of fun. It wasn't something I would want to count toward my score, though).
GGuy5 wrote: 4. if they are going to cycle it out next year with another event, why are you even bothering about getting rid of it?
Well, partly it's that we want to make sure that it will definitely be cycled out next year, and partly that we just want to complain about it, completely separate from actually getting rid of it :D .
GGuy5 wrote: 5. It is good to have an easy event every now and then; it is a whole lot better than being bombarded with 5 events at state or regional and have a easy event thrown in to calm you down
If you have too many events, then give them to someone else... then, to relax, go outside and play frisbee in a venue that won't affect your score.

Fossils is a serious academic event. I get that you were just using as an example, but it's a completely different issue. The problem is whether or not Pentathlon belongs in Science Olympiad. I don't think anyone would argue that Fossils isn't really science.
As for what we can do, very little, but we can whine about how much we dislike the event here :-P Also, I've never understood the argument that "we can't do anything about it, so why would we argue about it?" Sometimes a little debate is fun for its own sake.

I got back from state last weekend and noticed something about the teams that made it to nationals. Last year, Solon and Magsig made it to nationals. This year Solon and Chardon made it. Magsig lost to Chardon by ten points. Out of 40 teams, Magsig got 33rd in Pentatholon. Without the event they would have been ahead of Chardon and would have been able to go to nationals. So, in essence, you could say that Pentathlon caused the reigning 3rd place national team not to go to nationals this year. To me that is unfair!!! :x

it seems like alot of ppl have missed the true meaning of SO....TO LEARN AND STUDY SCIENCE....and if those ppl just want to get out of school, then they don't deserve to be awarded or even participate in an event

i agree with crzyliljelybean, the random trivia would be fine if the results of the event didn't depend on something totally unrelated to science. the point of science olympiad is to learn, not to jump-rope.
