I think that even if Detector Building doesn't work out, Robot Arm is still not coming back, the prime reason being the cost barrier. The goal of Science Olympiad is to promote science, and if you have an expensive price tag attached to it like a parasite you're not achieving its goal.

I understand that, but as of now, Detector Building seems too straightforward to be competitive (or maybe I am just seeing it wrong). Hopefully they will make the challenge somewhat harder to force more innovative solutions for the event.

They could make it apply to more than just temperature; at our regionals they held it as a trial event, but they had to measure much more than just heat

Even so, the premise is flawed. At the degree of accuracy teams will achieve with the use of microcontrollers, it will come down to luck as to who does well and who does not. The accepted value that the event supervisors obtain will not be perfect, as no temperature measurement system is perfect. This is what I'm most concerned about - if the accepted value is lower than the "real" value, and your measurement is high, then you are greaty punished.

Detector building is not meant to be just for temperature. The topic/goal is supposed to change every year. “Each year, the environmental condition (e.g. Light Level, Sound Level, Motion, pH, CO2 concentration, O2
concentration) to be measured will be identified in the Event Rules.“ Seeing as this event is supposed to be replacing mission (I think?), to make it a harder build they could make it required that it has to be able to do multiple tasks rather than just temperature.

Yes. CTW is the B division counterpart to IAT.
