True.

Has anyone heard of Self Control? http://visitsteve.com/work/selfcontrol/ It's an app for macs that blocks certain websites (gmail, scioly, etc.) for a certain period of time. So, I'm going to have it block scioly, among others, for 1 hour so I can study for ornithology. :D

Oh, and when I say it block websites, it really blocks them. You can quit it, force quit it, or even delete the app (I think  ) and the websites will still be blocked until the time is up.

Personally, I'm going to wait until it gets nearer to the competition to make my notes sheet, so I can see what things I'm struggling with memorizing.

Does anyone know if PA has a modified bird list? I looked on the website and it didn't say anything, so I assume that there isn't, but I want to make sure before I start memorizing the birds.
well how much information could u possibly put on 1 page of paper?
what i will do is use the sheet to help me organize other stuff and to find information quicker. also probably put some general information that will help give clues on the bird's personality.

it definitely says that is allowed.
"States may have a modified state or regional list"
can someone help me on this note: on wikipedia it says that the Common Pauraque doesn't nest, but on this: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Comm ... ifehistory
it says they nest on the ground.
if they do nest on the ground, does that mean they actually build a nest and leave it on the ground?
thanks
Wiki says "no nest is made," which is not the same thing as not nesting. The website you linked to also says "no nest structure," so there is no contradiction. As in the vast majority of cases I have seen, Wikipedia is borne out by other authorities.
hmm. I was confused by the stereotypical nest on the ground.

I have a couple questions:

1. Adding on to a question asked before, if pennsylvania does have its own state list, then would that one or the national one be used at various invitationals? the thing is that teams from other states go to invitationals and so i'm from NY but my team is going to the athens invitational and i want to know whether to study the national list for that or (if it exists) the pennsylvania state list. i think it rlly sucks that i (nd i'm sure others here as well) will have to study 2 different lists. even though the national one nd NY's are very similar, it's still annoying

2. Are the tab guidelines basically the same as last year for herpetology cuz last year i had like a 100 rlly thin tabs with just the genus/family name on them and that was okay for both regionals and states. i mean, how small do they have to be? one person mentioned that they couldn't be post-it size, but what about those thin post-its that are meant for tabbing? nd also last year i remember a rule came out in like january in NY that was applicable only for states that the tab couldn't stick out more than a certain length, i think about 2.5 cm or something like that. is that gonna be a rule for this year too?

3. Now leaning toward the actual bird part of the event, does anyone know whether the glossy ibis (a bird for ny) nests on the ground or not cuz the cornell lab of ornithology says it does but my audobon book says very rarely. i hate conflicting information!

any answers would be greatly appreciated!

for your first question, I would ask for clarifications from state officials, or just study the nationals list. I mean, if you're gonna go that far, then why not? MY state for one, has no reduced list, which is annoying.
Second question, I think the post-its meant for tabbing are okay for it, or if you cut the post-its really small-like. and the 2.5 cm question, that's a good question, I don't know.

Your right, all the websites the I just looked at have different info. Here is probably the most accurate (and comprehensive) answer to your question: "The [glossy ibis's] nests are usually built in trees or bushes but are sometimes built on the ground."

I think this question was answered a couple pages back, but yes, the post its for tabbing are alowed. I don't think that how far the tabs stick out is a rule. but some teachers are sticklers so be sure to make them even! jk
(sorry about the quote thing, I messed up when I copied it)

Wait, so does PA have a modified list?

And about the tabs, I think the answer was that regular post its are too big, but I think if you have thin ones it would be fine.
