At state yesterday we did Tipping the Scales. I managed to get third with five grams off. One of my schoolmates on the B team guessed 12 grams higher than I did, but he was marked as 44 grams off. Anyone know how this could have happened?

are you sure you got the same object? at our lake conference comp we all got different items...

penalties? doubtful...actually it makes sense, did your friend ever touch the scale during it's presentation?

We recieved the same object because the guy only brought one. I don't think he touched the device, but his partner might have. I should ask them.

Turns out we had recorded a different number than I thought we did. I was still 5 grams away, but my friend and I had almost a 60 gram difference instead of a 12 gram one.

That rule varies from state to state. Here in KY for example, some schools take 3 teams to state.
Thanks, I didn't know that.

There is nothing that says you can't bring a bunch of extra general materials in your box to adapt your device to the mystery material. You can do a lot with cardboard and duct tape.
Is the adhesive on tape considered a form of glue or not?

It depends on how your judge interperates the rules.

Ok. we are growing frustrated with a spring scale. Anyone care to shed light on more accurate scales?

How crucial was the coin sorter's height in the score placement?
