i got owned at states (writer). went from 2nd regionals, switched my doer (other guy didnt have any other events, and wasnt "holding his weight"), and got 10th out of 32... i wasnt too optimistic about it but i was at least hoping single digits.

and the structure was a square wire board 27x27 small squares. a bunch of random things running through the holes like pins and pipe cleaners.

So much I could say about this event....First of all, in my opinion, MY FAV EVER!!! And second MOST FUN event that I did all year...I placed 3rd with my boyfriend at the Mentor meet ....his mom ran the event and scored everything...

Solon got perfect score out of 60 and I remember her telling us that one of the writers actually drew diagrams of the thing I was like....what the heck?! It's Write It Do It not Draw It Do It! But anyways....yeah I had lots of fun in this one this year

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure that you're not allowed to use diagrams.

What materials have you used?

We always practice with K'nex, Legos, Styrofoam and toothpicks, pipe cleaners (god, I hate those things), Tinker Toys, as well as other random materials that we find lying around. I thought everyone practiced with K'nex and Legos- they're like the most basic materials possible- but last year at NY States, it was made of Legos and as we left the room, the girl sitting behind me said, "That was so hard- I'd never practiced with Legos before."
This was STATES, in New York, which is a pretty competitive state... We talked a little, and she clearly had been trained as a Writer, not just thrown onto the event- so it was utterly bizarre to me that she could have never used Legos in practice.

*raises eyebrows* "Lego privileges"? Because Legos are so expensive/hard to procure/dangerous for kids to be trusted with?

My team has never practiced with legos. But, this is Colorado they love paper plates and stuff alike.

that's stupid. if ur in NY then it should be really competitive. i mean in NJ its prob. the same or even worse. our team practiced with linkin logs, legos, k'nex, and tinker toys. but nothing like toothpicks or pipe cleaners. those would be really hard.

Styrofoam spheres and toothpicks are good, because even though there's a bazillion angles that you could attach the toothpick to the sphere, anything within 10-15 degrees of that is pretty much fine- and there's a limited number of ways you can put it all together. Pipe cleaners, though, are evil, since you can twist them any which way... ew.

Regionals always has the most difficult WIDIs- weirdest materials, least consistent models, least logic on the part of the event sup...
