Are you talking about the amazon link you PM'ed me? That looks more like field guide than an encyclopedia. I might get this one though, it seems fairly useful.

THAT one (sam benvie)
is MUCH MUCH cheaper on amazon used... than the one that kestrel linked to. of course, i am too lazy to look elsewhere.
No matter what the experiment's result, there will always be someone eager to:(a) misinterpret it(b) fake it, or (c) believe it supports his own pet theory.

It's over 50 dollars new, but yes, it's really cheap used. I would bring a field guide to the competition rather than an encyclopedia.

oh yes
i don't really know anyone that wouldn't
but, encyclopedias are great for writing info into your field guide and just plain reading out loud and in hope that the information would stick

next year ill have a lot of ID events
rocks and minerals and forestry...does reach for the stars count?

you should probably be getting specimens off the 2004 list, since i doubt there will be MAJOR changes...(correct me if i am wrong)

for resources, websites, encyclopedias, field guides, anything you can get

I think it would be fairly accurate, though they might add specimens. The list is 162 trees long, so it is doubtful... and I don't think trees have evolved in the past seven years  .

On another note, does anyone have a surefire way to identify the 19 different species of pine? they all seem so similar, and you can only really go off needle length and needle number in a petiole since color is somewhat unreliable. It would be hard if they gave us just a branch...
