Am I allowed to take back a protect? If not, can the other officers please protect?

Re: SciOly Assassination 111: Third Down
The Scientists seemed confused at first, almost using the same play that they had used previously. Then a new voice spoke out. "What if we send texas that way, then behind them, while everyone else goes for the Hail Mary?" Everyone else thought P2P's idea, which, if a little odd, might work. So Sciolyville jogged on to the field, where Fibonacci924 received the snap. After a few wrong routes, Fib decided to pass the ball to texas, and it was complete (though barely) with no penalty.
Again, you didn't really solve my clue, but you did protectly correct texas. Er, that is, correctly protect...
As P2P returned to the sideline, somewhat elated that their play had actually worked, they noticed that a scrap of paper was tucked into their socks. It read:
The key isn't bottom, but..

Ok, so I think that it's some sort of cipher and the line at the top is the key...?

Re: SciOly Assassination 111: Third Down
1) Saying "protectly correct" may hint at what the cipher is.
2) Key cipher? With the key being an antonym of bottom?
3) Seems like a substitution cipher.
4) Is the clue text connected to the but...?
EDIT:
Maybe it has something to do with the first letters of words, aka why they had to use protectly correct not correctly protect. - Probably not (as dragonfruit said)

It specifically mentions a key, though.
