Re: Future Aviation Events
If the glider event were to replace helicopters would you become the event superviser?

Re: Future Aviation Events
I will almost certainly remain Helicopters supervisor since it will almost certainly move down to Division B.science8 wrote:If the glider event were to replace helicopters would you become the event superviser?
Indoor is a relatively small branch of model aviation and as a result, there are almost no regional clubs dedicated to it. However, there is quite a dedicated community surrounding it both through the internet and through a variety of regional contests. There are a couple of things going on in the chicago area, in particular the Bong Eagles (yes, that is their real name) who fly up in Milwaukee and Racine. Here is the link to their indoor section: http://kenanne.50megs.com/BongEagles/page6.htmlmrsteven wrote:I was actually looking at joining an indoor freeflight club and work on building f1d/penny planes/any event that i could but i couldnt find anything in the northern chicago area :/ catapult would be awesome too just unsure how to get into the AMA clubs

You will know the exact rules when the manual comes out in the fall.science8 wrote:What time will we know the exact rules over the summer?

Re: Future Aviation Events
There will often be a rough draft of rules that will be released in the summer; however, there is no guarantee that these rules (or even the events) will stay exactly the same in the fall.science8 wrote:So i wont know during the summer? or will i know the exact events in the summer and the rules in the fall?

Nothing is 100% final until you see a rules manual.science8 wrote:So i wont know during the summer? or will i know the exact events in the summer and the rules in the fall?

Re: Future Aviation Events
This comes up every year at about this time, "What are next years rules so I can get started now?" Let me suggest, it doesn't really matter what the detailed rules for catapult glider are, you can still prepare usefully for next year using this years rules!!! And this applies equally to all the building events! If you can build a good tower, you are well on the way to building a good boomilever. Same for cars, or robots. We change up the rules so you have to think, and so you can't pass on last years devices to next years teams, but the fundamentals of the events don't really change/chalker7 wrote:<SNIP>Nothing is 100% final until you see a rules manual.
If you become successful with the current draft rules, you will be well ahead of the curve for ANY flying event that comes out. You'll know how to build light. You'll have been able to explore the 'tricks' that might be available for dramatically improved performance. You'll have a much improved understanding of the aerodynamics, controls and test processes that apply to ALL the flying events.
There's a reason that chalker7, myself and others talk/mentor all the flying event. Once you understand the basics, you can cross apply quickly. Really, if you are a competent builder flyer, you'll be competent under any set of rules we can make in a VERY short time, and expert with any reasonable level of effort.
And finally, even if there isn't any flying event (highly unlikely) you'll still have learned a new area of science and valuable science (and life) skills while having loads of fun!!
So, just have fun building and flying gliders over the summer and you will be more than ready for the rules in the fall. Heck, if you can't fly inside, fly outside! Just build and fly!

Re: Future Aviation Events
Heheh! I'll be excited to work in another balsa building flight event next year. Helicopter was a lot of stress, but I learned much about balsa and flight in general.
Chalker, if I were to fly balsa outdoors in the hot, humid area of Houston, what should I beware of? What are the main differentces between flying outside vs. inside? There aren't a lot of large open indoor areas where I live, but there are open fields aplenty. I can't wait to build my first launch glider!
