At our states test, the proctor told the writers what color to write about, because they used beads with different shades of color. I don't know if this is how it works in other states/tests.

I don't really see why this is an issue. You are never going to not specify what color it is if the supervisor doesn't tell you anything. (Or, to refrain from using a double negative, you ALWAYS specify the color). If the supervisor tells you not to, and you think that if you did it would confuse your teammate, then don't do it. But in any other situation, ALWAYS specify the color.

Actually, writing a color for each piece takes time, and when you add the time taken to write each color, that can make a significant difference, especially if the structure is extremely complex and takes a long time to describe

Well, what are you going to sacrifice, less than a second (for a fast writer) to write out each color or a point for every color you miss, which could add up substantially?

NY B states was Knex, really easy. About ten pieces or so. For that of course you write color. But I don't think that it's really a major issue. When I brought it up I meant how many people had experience with not having color matter. Also, today they allowed us to use x symbol but they also allowed us to touch the structure, which it explicitly says you can't do. Oh well.

I was at NY states as well, and it was so easy I thought 10+ teams would've had a perfect structure. It turns out the second place team had at least one incorrect connection, so I'm really curious as to what happened/how the event was graded.
The proctor/judge was very lenient, like Gemma said he allowed us to use the degree symbol and arrows so long as they merely "accentuated" certain lines and didn't show your partner how to build it. He also allowed you to do anything you wanted with the structure besides take it apart. With all of that, I'm really surprised virtually no one built it perfectly.

Yeah, I got third (not trying to brag) and we think we had one connection off but we are not sure. If second place did then we probably did too.

I was friends with the doer on the 2nd place team, and she told me she took around six minutes to build it. We took fifth, and my partner took around a minute to build it, so we must've had 2-3 wrong connections.

Yeah, my doer took 5 minutes about to build it, maybe six.
