Hi, I'm doing this event at states, but my region doesn't currently run it so I'm in the midst of understanding the event.

As I understand, the on-site build and test are held concurrently so you split the group members between the build and the test. If this is so, why at NY is there both a test section and a self schedule location? I don't see any way that the pre-build needs you there to test it. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Actually that is really weird. The pre-build is being impounded so I'm guessing they have one slot for the written test and another for the onsite build. But at my regionals the written test and onsite build happened at the same time. If they have two separate slots I'm pretty sure 2/3rds of my team is gonna end up sitting around doing nothing during the onsite build lmao

So if that was the case we’d be able to have all 3 working on the test together? Just a weird situation.

I guess so. This might actually be a question for the states organizer

Do any of you know where to buy mini toobers on Amazon? 3d molecular designs is very expensive. I want to practice for the onsite build.

You don't need mini toobers if you just want to practice; Stuff like

works well too.
(and is a ton cheaper, mind you)

Does anyone know in general how much graders care about the length of the residues for the onsite build? I was debating if I should mark the backbone every 2 cm at the competition, as I think it would be a waste of time. Plus, all the grading rubrics I have seen so far do not require that the residues need to be exactly 2 cm long.

It's just a guideline from what I've seen. You could if you wanted, but I find it pretty hard to stick with the demarcations. They're mainly looking for the structure to look similar to the model, so if you can do that you should be fine.

I've been reading through the provided papers papers to try and find "functionally relevant features." However, they mostly discuss specific amino acids. Are there any sources that I can use to find other things I could display, or is sticking with just amino acids fine?
