Perfect heat retention is impossible.

What are you using to measure temperature?

Especially with a 1.5cm hole in the lid.

First of, this was years before my time.

Second, you are allowed to plug the hole.

I have replicated the design and I can tell you this, for SOME temperature, time combinations, the thermometer does not sense a difference in between the starting temp and the final temp.

You are not allowed to plug the hole because the one rule states that there should be no obstruction of the hole.

I have a plan that I am more than happy to implement

1. First, the mock competition will take place on the weekend of Nov 18-19.

2. Anyone interested should all sign up

3. All those who sign up must write a 12 question test with an answer key.

4. Submit all those tests to me by November 15/16.

5. On Friday, November 17, I will pm the tests to all those who signed up.

6. Through the weekend, take all the tests.

7. Submit all your scores. I will average them all, (with everyone being exempt from the test they wrote.)

[I trust that nobody will cheat as this is to gauge your level. There is nothing to be gained from cheating.]

8. Placings will be released.

9. All the tests will be released.

So this way, the tests make it onto the test exchange benefiting everybody but one must submit a test to get access to the actual competition.

What do y'all think?

- Instead of posting the placings, you should post an anonymous list of the scores, and individually email each person what they got. That way, there is no incentive to cheat or brag about your score, and it will truly be just for practice.

To answer your questions...

1. I truly don't think this is necessary. Div B and Div C are tested on the same general topics. Feel free to make your test as difficult as you choose.

I have noticed that Science Olympiad Tests don't always stay within the parameter so as long as you don't do anything TOO crazy, feel free to test on anything Thermo.

2. You may take it with your partner if you wish but no more than 2 people (as the rules state.)

BTW...I take it that you are signing up?

For the anonymous list of scores thing, that definitely seems like a good idea.
