Because the ancient people who named the Earth saw that the Earth contained more than dirt or soil and if they went with that route they would have to name it Soil-and-Water-and-Rock-and-Tree-and-Air-and-Animal-and-Hut-and-Human-and-Cloud-and-etc., which is quite a mouthful.

Just say random words/sounds and let them have any meaning you want. No one has to understand your language for it to be a language, and the meaning of words do change over time, so who cares if you forget the meaning of a ton of them? Just make them up again and say they've changed!
