On an invitational Crave the Wave test, there was a question about why someone would want to do do a mass spectrometer analysis (I think that is what it was, it was a long time ago). Neither me or my partner knew, so we put: because you are a nerd with too much time on your hands! When we got the test back, the judge had put a smiley face by it. I think we still placed really high.

On the state amphibians and reptiles test a while back, my sister was partners with someone who hadnt studied at all. He kept overriding her answers and instead put snake, turtle, or snake for the common names. They placed really badly.

My partner and I got assigned last minute to geologic mapping...
1)We didn't have a stereonet or any of the other supplies we apparently needed
2) We didn't have any knowledge of topographic mapping/anything remotely related to it
3) we forgot a pencil and had to use a sharpie.

We finished the test in twenty minutes and spent the rest of the time debating about the acceptable time stand up and leave. Midway through the test my phone fell out of my pocket and slammed to the ground in the loudest way possible. Our answers regarding some angle of elevation were "steep" and "not as steep but still steep." We gave up on the whole topographic map part and instead drew a confused duck, and somehow managed to get sharpie on the desk.

How did I never see this thread? I have too many to share! (Mostly not me, but I'll point out my stupid mistakes for your entertainment.)

Food Science:
Q: Name some dishes that could be made with eggs.
A: Eggs.

Q: List a few ingredients allowed in the event that are primarily lipids.
A: Vanilla extract.

Q: How do you do a Benedict's test?
A: Put some stuff in a cup, then put it in some water.

CJAP:
Q: Was the sample endothermic or exothermic?
A: No.

Crime Busters:
Powder coach put out was CaCO3; kid guesses crack.
(My own fail) Started writing essay in last 2 minutes of event, then kind of gave up and begged for points. Somehow, we got a ribbon.

Forensics:
Didn't actually do anything, just drew a picture of herself looking all depressed while saying, "I have no idea what I'm doing..."

ExpD:
Not actually an answer, but misspelled our school's name in a hilarious way (i.e. Futon instead of Fulton).
(My own fail) Wrote data table in statistics part. (I was in 7th grade; please have some mercy.)

This is a Populus leaf right. I've had my fair share of dumb answers too. And writing the same answer for like 5 questions is actually a good strategy when you at least one of the questions' answer but you don't know which one. Like there was this fish fin bone labeling station for Fossils and I literally wrote radius for everything. Ended up getting the highest score (no surprise). One time my sister was like "Oh hey, that thing looks really really cute so its Smilodon when the next question said, 'This specimen was scarier than T-Rex.'" She ended up getting the question right.

This wasn't exactly a test answer, but for my scrambler event I was sitting in my kitchen thinking about how I would construct some intense wooden launch system for the car, but then I happened to look down at the chairs/stools in our kitchen. Showed up to the competition carrying what was basically a stool with a small laundry hamper attached to the back. I actually managed to get second.

I have way to many of these stories.
Another time I got randomly thrown into the fossils event and didn't have a binder so the hour before the event my partner and I hand drew pictures of as many fossils as possible since we couldn't print anything
