I think a great lineage really helps a team more than one would think. They have students from Div. C that could help in their previous events (which they might have medaled at Nats in). Our team, for our first time at states, got 22nd. We had no prior experience at states, nor did we have any graduates to teach us anything. We had one coach and nothing to compare our performance to (except our mainly noncompetitive region). Teams like Solon, for Nationals, and Gelinas/Eagle Hill, for our states, have strong lineages in SciOly that go waaaaaay back.
Point being, it is important to take past performance into consideration because the new kids, even though they might be new, they will have years of experience behind them coming from other people who used to be on their team.

I think Casey has a strong point. Veterans/highschoolers are a valuable resource for our teams. Gneissisnice for example, is a college student who has helped us on many events. FueL and starshine make appearances to teach, and the others also pass along resources as they find them.
Lots of 'powerhouse' teams have both a B and C component. These are just the ones I know off the top of my head:
Paul J. Gelinas/Robert C. Murphy -> Ward Melville
Eagle Hill -> Fayetteville Manlius
Solon Middleschool -> Solon Highschool
Memorial -> Mentor

Just some data for your interest as you update the rankings. Meads Mill just won the MI state tournament by 150 points over the second place team. Their score was 70 points. They were on fire.

How is Meads Mill suddenly so dominant after winning state for the first time last year? Was their Science Olympiad program new? Do they have personnel from successful teams elsewhere? It's very interesting.

Nationals is going to be really interesting... Solon, Winston Churchill, Meads Mill, Marie Murphy, and Daniel Wright are all after that 1st place spot.

Ha; everyone's after the first place spot, really. Unless they don't care. I think this is the year that the Solon winning streak shall be broken. I predict that it will be done by Churchill.

I know, the three years I went to nationals Solon just went boss mode, so there wasn't much drama outside of my team's and my individual events. This year is shaping up to be a fight. Definitely will be watching awards online!
