Production of oil, however, already has or is peaking, so oil production rates will begin to go down. It will become scarce gradually. The flow of oil won't simply stop when the last drop from the last well is pumped out. As it is, there's also some vaguely known quantity of oil that we know we can't get at with current technology.

However, what's left will become more and more expensive to obtain in the next few decades. I think 20 years is far too optimistic a timespan for new technologies to supplant oil's role in the world, considering current economic and (maybe more immutable) political conditions.

Exactly. But much the same, as oil prices rise, demand for alternate energy forms will rise as well.

Well then, the government needs to make a move about trying to create more sources of energy.
