This is really confusing to me. It's a day late, which shouldn't be a dealbreaker for any team, so I understand if he does not make an exception for any team, but I don't agree with that policy to begin with if that's the case. And it's counterproductive to not let Ward compete since they're one of the best schools in NY and only improve the state's competitiveness. So I neither understand nor agree with this decision at all, unless I'm missing something.

It's not a national policy either. It's a completely arbitrary policy made by the state director and I can't fathom why. Most states don't have any sort of policy about that, as long as you get the registration in.

I would like to point out there's other arbitrary policies that can be just as annoying but nobody probably will ever to be argue, not just in NYS:
-NYS's two extra trials
-North Carolina's odd rules clarifs (no laptops for astro?!), replacing events
-Texas's 4 extra trials that can sub in for normal events
-Just you know what, in general how some states have "states-only" clarifications (so far the one I've approved of is our extra 5 state minerals since that at least adds fun/interest to the event)

Probably others, but most prominent example off the top of my head. Tbh, I do feel like there should be some deadline, just not that hard...beside the point gneiss and someone from Ward told me they're certainly fighting the decision, so guess we'll see how that works out :/.

It is also a relatively new policy. Great Neck South got caught by it a couple of years ago, but before that teams sometimes brought the check to competition. If that presented some kind of problem for tournament organizers, I think the goal of promoting earlier filing could have been accomplished with a less severe penalty. It certainly is not in New York's best interest to bar its best team, and it seems wrong to punish the students for a relatively minor oversight on the part of the coaches.

P.S. it was more than a day, or so I hear. I don't know how late it was, but I'm not sure how much that matters.

I think the NC clarif was addressed on the soinc site though. I don't really have a problem with trial events, as I've had to face stuff like that before at WI invites (obviously without the weight of a state competition) but I think it's an ok call. I think the idea for a tournament you have qualified for already seems somewhat illogical. Unless that's how Nats does, when you have to notify them of showing up, but still, that doesn't require paperwork, I assume. A quick email would suffice, I think.

We have to pay a NY registration fee at the beginning of the year, and then a state competition registration fee later.
