I mean, myself and hundreds of others there don't know your name, so we wouldn't know the difference if it projected you or your best friend for Keep the Heat.

That said, though, I still wouldn't plan on preparing for two events that conflict...I mean, you have two (or more, as it may be) competitions prior to State where the same should be true. But do what you want and what's best for your team. If that means building the insulator device, knock yourself out.
Well... truth.... sometimes things happen that require someone else running an event, but in the end I get the medal and credit for it since I did it. keep the heat is a different story though, since thats not singularly a building event, theres a study aspect to it so I wouldn't expect a medal for it if your device was used, since it did require a bit of their own work to pull it off.

I keep going back to the KISS principle with robot arm this year... I start off with an awesome complex idea and it simples out to how most people would do it... not liking that... Very little 'cool' effect. Functionality is good too, but thats no fun

Poor Steven, you couldn't let it be mainstream, now, could you? (I'm sorry, but that was just asking for it... who's the hipster now? )

why make something functional if its run of the mill?
Id much rather spend my time on something really different and interesting

But does unconventional and 'fun' score better than typical?

If your life runs around high scores thats no fun.
Usually my oddball things do do well, but theres no fun in just taking a run of the mill arm with components you already have from s vex kit or something. Adventure, use some programmable boards, learn a different way to control, think outside the ordinary. Its a much more interesting place to be

Skink's probably playing devil's advocate to some extent, but I think a point which sort of falls between both of yours is that innovation is good, and it feels awesome to have come up with a very original method, but that you shouldn't be that disappointed if working out the details results in something closer to the already established ways of doing it. Tried and true works too, and besides, it's not as if you didn't learn anything in finding that unconventional way, then seeing how it compares to the "run of the mill" way - you've probably found ways to improve upon them in the process.

If it does well either way, I suppose taking the road less traveled is fair. At least there are more possible materials to put in those insulators now allowing for many such roads...dunno about some of the other events how much this applies. I guess I've seen some...creative...trebuchets.

And happy birthday, courage!

So, you're saying you're not competing in either division? Sorry to hear that.
