Try Fun Tack, the stuff that you use to put posters up. It works much better than clay. As for the other problem, try to find a narrower straw.stroudchick wrote:I have attempted about 4 different clays, but thank you for your suggestion! And sorry, I think I worded that incorrectly. There is only a 1 centimeter distance between our 0% and 10% mark. Like, each mark is about 1 millimeter apart. Have you happened to come across this issue?Makeithappen wrote:try using diffrent clay, and the numbers probably will be close no matter whatstroudchick wrote:Has anyone else had any difficulties creating their salinometers? It seems as though my clay either dissolves the salt within our solution or the distance between our 0% and 10% marks tend to be about 1 centimeter apart.

Re: Water Quality B/C
Narrower straw? Try a narrower container. I used mine in a thin graduated cylinder, and the measurements were, say, a centimeter or two in between.

Re: Water Quality B/C
The measurement spaces should be the same regardless of the container you use, unless it sinks of course. Try to get your hands on waterproof clay (we reused ours from awesome aquifers two years ago :P), and yes, thinner straws are better. Maybe try a coffee stirrer straw.
My partner and I used a pretty thin bendy straw, and the differences in buoyancy still weren't that big. We were only able to mark 0, 5, and 10%.

Re: Water Quality B/C
Are there any other recommended materials besides straws such as glass tubes for salinometers?
Also, did anybody make a simple, electronic salinometer? If so, how?

It's ridiculously easy to make a straw-clay salinometer, and additional stuff wouldn't help that much.Cjkowalcz wrote:Are there any other recommended materials besides straws such as glass tubes for salinometers?

I looked for two hours for a simple electronic one, and I couldn't find one. .-. I didn't really need one, though. You're better off not wasting your time.

Just an idea, maybe if you wait a plain old straw, yould just half to mark it, and then youd have a salinometer

Hey. I was just wondering if there were many questions about estuaries on any tests you guys took. On the test I took there were none.

They may not have been on your test, but they are definitely something to know! Just read up on them and maybe add to your notes if you have room.Blwrunner wrote:Hey. I was just wondering if there were many questions about estuaries on any tests you guys took. On the test I took there were none.
